For more than a decade, Judge Kroll has shown he is committed to ensuring our legal system is a place where we can find fairness, justice and accessibility for all — regardless of racial identity, economic status, educational background or upbringing. An Asian child of immigrants, he has experienced the impacts of racial marginalization within his family and community from a young age. As a prosecutor with Multnomah County, Judge Kroll witnessed how the criminal justice system disproportionately affects Black and brown folks. As such, he fights for underserved, underprivileged Oregonians, protects victims of domestic violence, and supports low-income community members in navigating the courtroom. We commend Judge Kroll’s efforts to cultivate stronger relationships between our courts, communities and citizens.
As revealed in the 2020 census, API communities are the fastest-growing racial demographic in the state with a significant concentration calling Washington County home. Despite their growing numbers, our communities continue to meet systemic political, social and environmental obstacles leaving our challenges invisibilized and needs unmet. With more than 1 in 4 Oregonians identifying as BIPOC and no Asian representation on the current bench, there has never been a more crucial time to see a reflective democracy.
As Oregon’s population continues to grow and shift, we will need a younger, more diverse democracy to meet our unique needs and those of future generations. We have a need for representative, experienced voices who can speak to those needs and are aware of the impacts of the criminal justice system on BIPOC communities. Judge Kroll’s appointment to Washington County Circuit Court will be a meaningful step towards building that representative democracy we all deserve.
