Portland, OR– APANO CUF announces the release of a Fair Housing public service announcement (PSA) video to help Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders understand their fair housing rights. The video emphasizes that the Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), familial status, and disability. Produced in partnership with National CAPACD and made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the PSA is available in English and 15 AAPI languages to reach in-language, immigrant, and limited English proficient communities.

“Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community members have faced discrimination in housing in Oregon. Whether it’s perceptions of larger families, pungent cultural foods, or price gouging due to the model minority myth, these PSAs are important for community members who are struggling with housing issues and discrimination, particullary as we go into the 3rd year of the pandemic.” said Duncan Hwang, Associate Director, APANO CUF.

Earlier in May, APANO CUF and National CAPACD heavily promoted the PSA through a variety of web-based efforts in collaboration with 20 organizations across the country.

“Since the onset of the pandemic, discrimination against Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities has increased significantly. This is, however, not a new issue - though it is one that has been overlooked for far too long. Our diverse communities have faced housing discrimination and housing insecurity in the U.S. for generations. These PSAs are designed to be informative and accessible; they will advance community knowledge on housing rights and fair housing during a critical time as we enter another year of the pandemic,” said Seema Agnani, Executive Director of National CAPACD.

APANO CUF serves as a trusted anchor in the community through their work to share resources and provide information to community members facing housing discrimination and other housing challenges.
