APANO’s Theory of Change identifies the individual, institutional, and cultural steps or shifts we believe are necessary. It is our pathway, uniting our complex web of organizing and advocacy activities in a coherent way that best leverages our strengths and resources to make significant, concrete change.

This is a living, working document that is regularly revisited by our board, staff, and members.

The Individual, Institutional, & Cultural Shifts Needed

At the Individual Level:

  • Cultivate a strong analysis of power and oppression.
  • Foster the ability to articulate core APANO values of racial justice, strong families and the social determinants of health.
  • Take increasing levels of leadership in APANO campaigns, inspiring new people to contribute their time and treasure.

At the Institutional Level:

  • Full inclusion and equitable representation of AAPI in all aspects of decision-making.
  • Be held accountable for AAPI communities.
  • Adopt policies to address disproportionate impacts to AAPI.
  • Equitable distribution of resources with a focus on culturally specific strategies
  • APANO is seen by the community as a hub for AAPI engagement.

At the Cultural Level:

  • AAPI are a core part of movements for justice, in solidarity with oppressed communities
  • Public values affirming the inherent worth and dignity of all people.
  • As a society, we address issues with an intersectional analysis
  • We challenge the model minority myth.
